You sit or kneel on the wide part, and the raised point usually has an iron grating blade with sharp teeth. You move the halved coconut back and forth over the teeth, creating fresh coconut flakes. These graters are most common in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and South India and date back to the 19th century. The grater has a beautiful patina.
